For a manlier-than-thou man, talking about make-up out loud can be daunting. And experimenting with it? Get out of here. But, in an age where beauty is constantly becoming more inclusive, more gender-neutral and unapologetic, it’s time to dip your toes – or make-up brushes – into these uncharted waters. Here are make-up tips for men.
First thing’s first
We’re not telling you to paint on a whole face of make-up before straightening your tie. Think of it as a means to cover and hide anything you may want to, well, cover and hide, or enhance something that you want to show off. So start small, and remember that prep work is everything. First thing in the morning, thoroughly wash your face and pat it dry. Then add a light layer of an eye treatment such as Kiehl’s Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado (R440, kiehls.co.za) to help reduce puffiness, treat tired and lifeless-looking eyes and create a hydrated base for the day. Follow with a good moisturiser to help regulate moisture levels. Try Cowshed Bullocks Soothing Moisturiser (R323, beautifulage.co.za).
Take it one step further
If winter has gotten the best of you and your skin is looking dull and sallow, add a CC (colour-correcting) cream such as Neutrogena Visibly Clear Correct & Perfect CC Cream (R128.07, foschiniforbeauty.co.za). This gem will even out any discolouration, brighten and lightly cover imperfections while treating them. By applying a thin layer it won’t be detectable, but if you feel a little more coverage is needed, wait a few minutes and add another. Don’t forget to blend it out towards your ears, hairline and underneath the jawline.
