Brandon Maxwell, The Power dresser

Brandon Maxwell, The Power dresser

“I’ve always been surrounded by smart, classic and powerful women”
– Brandon Maxwell

Growing up during the ’80s in a small town in Texas, Brandon Maxwell spent much of his time watching impeccably dressed women drift through a popular boutique where his grandmother used to work. When he turned 18, he moved to New York to study painting, but soon realised it ‘wasn’t his thing’. He returned to his home town to get a degree in photo communications then went straight back to the Big Apple, where he found a job as an assistant stylist.

Flash forward to 2019 and Brandon is now one of America’s most sought-after fashion designers. Inspired by ‘powerful women’, he’s a go-to dresser for the likes of Oprah, Michelle Obama and Meghan Markle. Lady Gaga, however, is his favourite client and ‘BFF’. He even got to put his skills behind the lens to good use, directing Apple Music’s commercial for her song ‘A-Yo’, a single off of her Joanne album.

What sets Brandon apart is his talent for draping. ‘I start with a roll of fabric and a woman stands as I build it on her, piece by piece. The inspiration is really just how I am emotionally feeling that day.’ We bet he’s been feeling good of late: His recent collection, inspired by cowboy culture, got more press at New York’s spring fashion week than any other designer’s work.

Remember when Lady Gaga owned the pink carpet at this year’s Met Gala? She arrived in a giant fuchsia gown, ripped it off to reveal a black dress, then stripped it off further to show yet another pink dress and finally ended up in lingerie! All four of the looks were made by Brandon.

As one of the newer judges on the popular fashion reality show Project Runway, Brandon considers his role a bit of a ‘full circle’ moment as he’d been a fan of the show since day one. ‘It was a real learning tool for me. The fact that I’m on it is mind-blowing.’

Earlier this year, Brandon teamed up with beauty powerhouse MAC Cosmetics to create a limited-edition 12-piece make-up collection. Inspired by the colours of Texas, the shadow palette features various sultry desert shades.
